Current Activities

1991 - present, Freelance Consultant, in association with Ellis Developments Ltd, Textile Consultants.

Designing computer-generated ranges of medical and engineering devices using novel fibre placement techniques, and converting said designs to the machine code necessary to control textile machinery

Presently working with a large hi-fi loudspeaker company to investigate the use of novel textile techniques in the production of loudspeaker cones with enhanced properties.

Previous Activities

Contributed the design component of a £350,000 MedLINK project (‘SITE’) to create a minimally invasive vascular implant for the treatment of aortic aneurysms. This work has given rise to a growing family of related components for varied end uses in the body for which I have created the designs, working drawings and embroidery computer files.

Three year project successfully completed January 2000.

November 1997 to March 1998 working as freelance Womenswear textile technologist at NEXT, the fashion chain store, Enderby, Phase 4.

Design and development of novel seamless garment blanks on Santoni machinery for Adria (Charnos), Strabane, N. lreland, on sale in M & S stores.

Lace design consultancy for a local raschel lace company, also some computer design simulation for Leavers lace company and other more general design work.

Recent projects include evaluation of weaving computer simulation package for large Japanese multinational company, design and development of stretch fabrics on CAD single jersey machinery. Helped set up and manage a £700,000 DTI 'LINK' project to fund research into engineering uses for embroidery in composite materials, ('MASCET').

Other projects have included design of medical components with Leicester General Hospital, development of economical body armour, design of composite bone plates for orthopaedic use. Design of novel woven structures for artificial ligaments and biaxial cloths for structural composites.

1970-1991 COURTAULDS GROUP

1982-1991 Meridian Fabrics, Haydn Road, Nottingham.

Design Manager - responsible for fabric ranges working closely with customers (50% M&S) up to 75 tonnes per week mainly cotton fabrics, outerwear and underwear on rib, interlock, single jersey, jacquards, stripers, wrap stripes and so on.

Also responsible for design on small diameter CAD-driven underwear machine project whereby electronically patterned and striped underwear garment blanks with waistbands knitted individually. Was first in the world to have this type of garment in stores.

1971-82 Clutsom-Penn, Wilsthorpe Road, Long Eaton

Head Designer responsible for elastomeric lace ranges into Marks & Spencer, Berlei, Symingtons. Responsible for Sultzer Moratronik l8gg Double jersey machinery production of ranges of fabrics for diverse end uses; stretch covers, children's, ladies and menswear, outer and underwear on single and double jersey, rib in a variety of gauges. Coarse gauge raschel fabrics for outerwear, curtainings. Managed a design and development department of 5 personnel.
