A short Curriculum Vitae

Julian Ellis holds the degree of Master of Philosophy for research into the technology of fabrics. He was elected as Fellow of the Textile Institute (a body incorporated by Royal Charter) in 1985 in recognition of his major creative contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field of textile technology.

He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) by H M Queen Elizabeth II for services to the Technical Textiles Industry in 2004.


He was an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham

Julian is also a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (a body incorporated by Royal Charter). He has been actively employed in the textile industry for 50 years, much of it specialising in technical aspects of yarn, fabric and garment manufacture. He carried out research for Courtaulds Group in synthetic fibres, and was later technical manager of a company making knitted fabrics.   


During the period when the government was operating its Quality Initiative Campaign, he was a listed consultant in quality control for projects funded by the Department of Trade and Industry in the United Kingdom. During that programme, He was responsible for installing quality controls systems within a number of textile and garment manufacturing companies.


He has been a freelance consultant in textile technology for more than 30 years, consulting to the knitting, fabric and clothing industries, including the provision of advice on quality control and quality assurance procedures and practices. He was also a Special Lecturer in the Department of Surgical and Medical Sciences at the University of Nottingham, where he provides advice and assistance in textile related matters to both surgical and engineering departments.

Julian has published a number of scientific and technical papers, has been granted or applied for approximately twenty patents, and enjoys public speaking. He is a past President of Nottingham Textile Society, and former Chairman of the Narrow Fabrics Group of the Textile Institute, and of the East Midlands Technical Textiles Forum.

Julian Ellis is also past Chairman of the  Independent Monitoring Board (formerly Board of Visitors) at Nottingham Prison and served on the Local Review Committee of the Parole Board, and was a national tutor for Independent Monitoring Boards.
